Tips on How To Tow a Trailer

By Dimo on February 28, 2008

The weight capacities of the tow vehicle, the trailer hitch, ballmount, ball, and safety chains must not be exceeded by the gross trailer weight (GTW). The towing system will only be as strong as the weakest piece.

Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) - the weight of the loaded trailer. To determine GTW, weigh the loaded trailer on a vehicle scale.

Tongue Weight (TW) - the downward pressure placed on the ball by the coupler. On smaller trailers the TW can be measured using a bathroom scale and a box. On a level surface, place the coupler of the loaded trailer on the scale at normal towing height. For heavier tongue weights, use the method diagrammed below.

The Purpose of Wood Under Trailer Tires in Storage

By Dimo on October 17, 2007

Ideally you should attempt to get the weight off of tires when a trailer will be in storage for a period of time. But, this is not always practical or possible. If the weight can’t be removed, at a minimum you should try to move the trailer every three months to prevent tire flat spots and ozone cracking at the tire sidewall flex point. Flat spots will usually disappear after the tires warm up and travel for a distance, unless the vehicle hasn’t been moved for six months or more.

There are actually several reasons for blocking tires. The first step is to make sure the trailer is as level as possible so more weight isn’t on one tire than the others. The perfect scenario would be to store the trailer and its tires in a cool dry, covered area, but as we all know this is not always possible either.

Trailer Towing

Proof that the Santa Fe tows our trailerThe rules that apply to trailer towing are similar to those for RV towing. Basically, the towing vehicle and its trailer form a single united vehicle, though a hitch is involved. This reduces the margin for error, since what happens to the towing vehicle happens to the trailer, and vice versa – instantaneously.

Most trailer-towing vehicles employ a ball-and-coupler hitch. Though there may be variations, this type of hitch is basically a ball at the rear of the tow vehicle that latches into an A-shaped socket at on the front of the trailer. In certain cases, like boat and travel trailers, a load-distributing hitch is commonly used. These, as the name implies, spread the load as equally as possible over both the tow vehicle and the trailer.
